The announcement follows the news that the Government’s £3.4bn Warm Homes Plan will increase the funding for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers homeowners up to £7,500 to swap their old fossil fuel heating system for a new, low carbon one.
Labour has committed to spending £13.2bn on grants and low interest loans for household energy efficiency over the next five years. It has described the £3.4bn investment, announced in the Autumn Budget statement, as “the first step”.
Air source heat pumps work by extracting heat from the air. They use less energy than traditional heating systems, reducing carbon emissions and lowering energy bills. The Stiebel Eltron air source heat pumps launched by Greenscape Energy have been proven to cut household carbon emissions by 20%. While gas boiler owners fear the effects of cold winter weather on their heating systems, these air source heat pump models are able to efficiently provide heating and hot water at temperatures as low as -25°C. Unlike traditional boilers, they can also provide cooling in summer.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has experienced a surge in popularity during 2024 and overall uptake of heat pump technology is rising fast. Data from the MCS shows that there were 5,102 MCS Certified heat pump installations across the UK in October 2024, compared to 3,558 in October 2023. This is the highest number since the Boiler Upgrade Scheme was launched in spring 2022. Greenscape Energy is one of relatively few MCS Certified air source heat pump installers, with more than twice as many certified solar panel installers across the country.
Josh Young, Chief Executive Officer at Greenscape Energy, said: “Anyone who has been waiting for clarity on the Government’s plans for grants and funding before upgrading to a greener energy system can now make their decision far more confidently.
“With energy bills constantly rising, upgrading to an air source heat pump is a great way for households to take control of their energy as well as their carbon footprints. Compared to old gas boilers, which always seem to break down at the worst possible time, air source heat pumps require minimal upkeep and will last 15 to 20 years, making them an excellent long-term investment.
“For homes in rural areas where oil has historically been one of the only viable household heating options, despite being one of the worst for the planet, air source heat pumps offer better self-sufficiency with freedom from costly oil deliveries for good. Though solar panels are still the most widely installed home renewable energy source, we are seeing air source heat pumps rising in popularity, beginning to rival solar panels in Norwich, East Cambridgeshire and North Norfolk, and dramatically overtaking them by 44% in Kings Lynn and West Norfolk.
“We are very pleased to see the funding for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme increased and to offer our customers across East Anglia and beyond the latest air source heat pump technology from a globally renowned manufacturer.”
As well as the £7,500 offered by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, there is 0% VAT on the installation of certain energy-saving products including air source heat pumps until 2027. Homeowners interested in upgrading can contact Greenscape Energy for a free survey with no obligation to purchase.
