Survey
Free, no obligation. Includes a full heat loss assessment, room-by-room sizing, brand recommendation, and bespoke quote.
Install time
Typically 5 to 7 days on site for a standard whole-home install (boiler removal, ASHP install, hot water cylinder, controls commissioning).

Why install an air source heat pump in 2026?

Five things have made 2026 the strongest moment in the last decade to make the switch from a fossil-fuel heating system to a heat pump.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is substantial

£7,500 off mains gas and direct electric conversions, £7,500 off oil, LPG and gas conversions (the BUS grant is the same regardless of fuel). The grant is paid directly to us as the installer, reducing the headline price you see on your proposal. We handle the entire application.

Heating fuel prices remain elevated and unpredictable

Heating oil hovers around £1.40 per litre with regular spikes driven by global supply concerns. LPG sits significantly above pre-2022 levels. Even mains gas is roughly double its pre-2021 cost. A heat pump pegs your heating cost to a single fuel (electricity) that you can self-generate or load-shift.

Heat pumps now run efficiently in real UK conditions

Modern inverter-compressor heat pumps (the kind we install) deliver SCOP 4.0 to 5.0 in well-designed homes. Our typical Clivet + Adia Thermal install hits SCOP 4.6 (~460% efficiency) across a real UK heating year.

Government policy is one-directional

New gas boilers in new builds will be banned from 2025, then phased out of replacement market entirely by the mid-2030s. Heat pumps are the long-term replacement technology, and installing one now positions your home for the next 20-25 years.

Zero VAT until at least 2027

UK residential heat pump installs are zero-rated for VAT. The prices you see are the prices you pay.

Why heat pumps work like cruising versus stop-and-start driving

Here is the most useful intuition about how heat pumps differ from boilers: a heat pump is like driving a car at a constant 50 mph; a gas boiler is like driving at 80 mph, slamming on the brakes, sitting at the lights, then accelerating back to 80 mph and slamming on the brakes again.

The 50 mph cruise uses far less fuel even though it covers the same distance. The constant low-effort running is fundamentally more efficient than the high-effort, high-loss stop-start pattern.

A heat pump runs continuously at low output, modulating its compressor to deliver exactly the heat the home needs as outside temperature shifts through the day. A gas boiler fires hard, overshoots the setpoint, switches off, the room cools, the boiler fires hard again. Every cycle wastes energy in flue losses, standby losses, and water-cooling cycle inefficiency.

The same intuition applies to why some heat pumps deliver better SCOP than others. Heat pumps actually perform better in slightly less-insulated homes than in super-insulated new builds, because the compressor wants to run consistently, and a home with higher heat loss gives it consistent demand to chase. Counter-intuitive, but real, and worth knowing if you are in an older property and worried about heat pump suitability.

The three air source heat pumps we install

We have tested heat pumps from over a dozen manufacturers over the last decade. We have narrowed our offering down to three carefully chosen brands because each delivers something specific the others do not.

  • Clivet · our headline choice for most homes

Italian-engineered, with a dedicated UK headquarters for warranty support. Clivet uses a next-generation inverter compressor (rather than the cheaper on/off scroll compressors most budget installers use), which modulates compression to match the actual heat demand of your home moment-by-moment. The result is dramatically higher real-world efficiency in mild winter weather and shoulder months.

Crucially, Clivet is the only heat pump in our range that integrates with the Adia Thermal Control System, our headline smart-control integration that lets customers see real-time SCOP figures, set room-by-room schedules, integrate with smart electricity tariffs (Octopus Go, Intelligent, Cosy), and reach an Effective SCOP (e-SCOP) above the rated SCOP figure by aligning peak compression with cheap-tariff windows.

The combination of Clivet hardware + Adia Thermal control is what delivers our typical SCOP 4.6 (~460% efficiency) install figure.

  • Vaillant · the established UK mid-tier option

German engineering, decades of UK service network, and the safest “everyone knows them” choice. Particularly strong fit for customers already running a Vaillant gas boiler who want same-brand continuity through their UK heat pump installer service network.

Vaillant uses its own inverter compressor architecture (very similar to Clivet in principle) and is controlled through the myVAILLANT app. Does not integrate with Adia Thermal, but the native Vaillant controls are perfectly serviceable for most households.

  • Stiebel Eltron · ultra-premium German specification

The technical specification ceiling. German-engineered, premium-tier kit, particularly strong for larger properties, properties with complex heat loss profiles, or customers who specifically want the highest engineering specification regardless of price.

Stiebel Eltron uses an inverter compressor with industry-leading low-temperature operation (effective down to -25°C ambient). Our WPL 25, WPL A07 Premium, and the new Black Premium Range are the current models in our Stiebel lineup.

What you will save (running cost comparison)

The numbers below assume a typical 12,000 kWh per year heat demand plus 3,500 kWh for hot water (total 15,500 kWh of useful heat). All figures based on UK 2026 average tariffs.

Running on standard day-rate electricity (27p per kWh)

Heating running costs on standard day-rate electricity
Heating system Cost per kWh of useful heat Annual cost (15,500 kWh demand) Annual saving vs heat pump
Heat pump at SCOP 4.6 (~460% efficient) on standard day rate (27p/kWh)~5.87p~£910 per year(baseline)
Mains gas at 6.3p/kWh, 80% boiler efficiency~7.88p~£1,221 per year25% lower bills
Mains gas (older non-condensing), 70% efficiency~9p~£1,395 per year35% lower bills
Heating oil at £0.70/litre, 80% boiler efficiency~8.75p~£1,356 per year33% lower bills
LPG at £0.80/litre, 80% boiler efficiency~13.5p~£2,093 per year57% lower bills
Direct electric heating~27p~£4,185+ per year78% lower bills

Even on standard day-rate electricity, a heat pump at SCOP 4.6 beats every other heating source in the UK except modern mains gas (and even mains gas is only about £300 a year cheaper).

Running with battery load shifting
(8p off-peak via Octopus Go / Intelligent / Cosy)

Heating running costs with battery load shifting on an off-peak tariff
Heating system Cost per kWh of useful heat Annual cost (15,500 kWh demand) Annual saving vs heat pump
Heat pump at SCOP 4.6 on 8p off-peak (battery load-shifted)~1.74p~£270 per year(baseline)
Mains gas at 6.3p/kWh, 80% boiler efficiency~7.88p~£1,221 per year78% lower bills
Heating oil at £0.70/litre, 80% boiler efficiency~8.75p~£1,356 per year80% lower bills
LPG at £0.80/litre, 80% boiler efficiency~13.5p~£2,093 per year87% lower bills
Direct electric heating~27p~£4,185+ per year94% lower bills

That is ~£951 saved versus modern mains gas annually, ~£990 versus oil, ~£1,823 versus LPG, and ~£3,915+ versus direct electric.

The Adia Thermal Control System (on Clivet installs) automates this load shifting for you: it learns your tariff and your usage patterns, then pre-heats your home and your hot water cylinder during cheap windows, banking the heat for use during peak hours.

Running with solar integration

If you also have solar (or are installing solar alongside), roughly 25% of your annual solar generation overlaps with heat pump operating hours during the 5 to 6 active heating months (October to March). A typical solar + battery + ASHP household sees a further £150 to £400 per year saving on top of the battery-shifted figures above.

How big a heat pump do I need?

Sizing depends on heat loss (calculated during the free survey), not bedroom count, but bedroom count gives a useful starting indication:

Typical heat pump size and after-grant price by property
Property Typical heat pump size Typical after-grant price
2-bed flat or bungalow6 kW Clivet R290From £6,495
3-bed semi or terrace8 kW Clivet R290From £7,495
4-bed detached10-12 kW Clivet R290From £8,495
5-bed or larger14-16 kW Clivet R290 or Stiebel Eltron WPL 25, WPL A07 Premium, or new Black Premium RangeFrom £9,495

All prices above are after the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant (mains gas or direct electric conversions). For oil and LPG conversions, the grant is £7,500, dropping the headline price by an additional £1,500.

Stiebel Eltron and larger Vaillant systems sit above these figures for the same property size.

How a heat pump integrates with your other Greenscape kit

Heat pumps work hardest when they sit inside a broader low-carbon home setup. We install everything on this list, and we design heat pump installs with future integration in mind.

  • Heat pump + solar panels

Roughly 25% of your annual solar generation overlaps with heat pump heating hours. With a battery, you can also store excess summer solar for autumn/winter heat pump consumption.

  • Heat pump + battery storage (the load-shifting story)

A battery on a smart tariff lets you charge the heat pump from 8p off-peak overnight electricity, then discharge through the day during 27p+ peak hours. This is what drops the cost-per-kWh-of-heat from 5.87p to 1.74p.

  • Heat pump + air conditioning (the low-and-slow + blast combination)

Run the heat pump at a steady low-and-slow background temperature, then use air conditioning (in heat-pump mode) to blast a specific room (lounge, master bedroom) to a higher temperature for a couple of hours when needed. Massively more efficient than running the whole-house heat pump to a high setpoint constantly.

  • Optimising your heat pump with radiators

Heat pumps work best at lower flow temperatures (35-50°C) than gas boilers (60-70°C). Some radiators may need to be sized up or replaced with larger-surface alternatives to deliver the same room temperature at lower flow. We assess this during the survey and quote any required radiator upgrades at £250 per radiator.

Why Greenscape?

We are a specialist renewable energy installer with a 14-year track record across solar, battery, air conditioning, and heat pumps. Heat pumps are the most technically demanding install in our range and we have invested heavily in engineering depth.

What we don’t do

  • Our in-house expertise runs every customer journey

Greenscape’s renewable energy specialists and head of heating are employed staff who design, quote, and manage every install. Greenscape stays fully responsible for the work from survey through to commissioning, and our 5-year heat pump workmanship guarantee covers the full install.

  • We don’t quote off a phone call

Heat pump sizing depends on a real heat loss survey, not square footage assumptions. We will not give you a binding number until our surveyor has been to your property.

  • We don’t undersize to win the quote

An undersized heat pump short-cycles, runs inefficiently, and frustrates customers. If your property genuinely needs a 12 kW system, that is what we will quote, even if a competitor is offering an 8 kW for less.

  • We don’t oversize for safety margin

An oversized heat pump short-cycles in mild weather, ruins efficiency, and shortens the compressor life. We size to the actual heat loss, not “biggest unit you can fit”.

  • We don’t fit scroll-compressor budget brands

Only inverter-compressor heat pumps from Clivet, Vaillant, or Stiebel Eltron. Three brands, properly understood, properly installed.

  • We don’t charge for the survey

Free, no obligation. If your property is not suitable for a heat pump (genuinely rare, but it happens) you walk away owing nothing.

Our install process

From the day you sign off the proposal to install commissioning, typical timeline is 4 to 6 weeks. The BUS grant approval window adds 4-6 weeks at the start if it has not already been pre-approved.

Initial enquiry

Call, email, or visit the showroom. If you have your Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) handy we can give you a ballpark estimate immediately based on the heat loss data in your EPC.

Free property survey

with one of our renewable energy specialists at your home. The surveyor produces a 3D model of your property, calculates room-by-room heat loss factoring in air change rates and U-values of all the building materials, and assesses the existing system.

Comprehensive heat loss analysis report

is produced from the survey data. Then we work backwards into a heat emitter efficiency report, which tells us exactly which radiators in the property meet the heat demand of each room at the lower flow temperatures a heat pump runs at.

Co-design any radiator replacements

with you (BUS grant eligibility depends on the heat emitters meeting the calculated heat demand). We walk through how radiator sizing affects flow temperature, weather compensation, and overall ecosystem efficiency.

Completely bespoke proposal and full report

is sent to you, covering hardware, controls, location of the outdoor unit, electrical work, integration with any existing renewables on site, and an optional solar/battery proposal if you are interested in the full renewable ecosystem.

You decide in your own time

When you sign off the proposal, the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) application is submitted and the BUS grant application is handled by us, end-to-end.

Install scheduled, typical lead time 4 to 6 weeks from sign-off

The install team comes to site, removes the existing heating system, installs the heat pump and hot water cylinder, fits the Adia Thermal Control System on Clivet installs, upgrades any agreed radiators, and commissions the system.

You simply pay the difference of the BUS grant

(we collect the grant directly from the government), and you get a walk-through of the controls plus ongoing aftercare through annual service visits.

I've just had solar panels, battery and EV charger installed by Mark and Luke. They arrived a little early, did the job as quietly as possible with no fuss, and have finished much earlier than I'd expected. Mark then explained what's what, which I think I'll remember. Couldn't expect more. Scaffolding subcontractor was similarly efficient putting the scaffolding up. The back office and survey staff have been friendly and efficient too. It has been good to be able to visit the showroom office in Ipswich.

Common questions

01 How much does an air source heat pump cost in the UK?

Greenscape ASHP installs start from £6,000 for a 2-bed property after the £7,500 BUS grant, scaling up to £10,000 for a 5-bed property after grant. Oil and LPG conversions attract a higher £7,500 BUS grant (rather than £7,500), reducing the headline price by an additional £1,500. Every install is bespoke after a free heat loss survey. Finance is available on all installations through Greenscape Energy.

02 How much can I save by switching to a heat pump?

Depends on your current heating system. Oil conversions typically save £800 to £2,500 per year. LPG conversions save £1,000 to £3,000 per year. Direct electric (storage heater) conversions save £1,500 to £4,000 per year. Mains gas conversions break even to modestly positive on running costs but deliver larger benefits (predictability, carbon impact, BUS grant capture, lifetime kit, future-proofing). With battery load shifting on a smart tariff, every conversion saves significantly more.

03 Will my heat pump work in cold weather?

Yes. The refrigerant inside the heat pump boils at -45°C, which is why heat pumps work even when outside air is well below freezing. Greenscape installs (Clivet, Vaillant, Stiebel Eltron) all operate effectively down to -20°C ambient temperature, dropping in performance slightly but continuing to deliver heat. The case studies we have from East Anglia customers across the 2024-25 winter (including the cold January 2025 snap) all stayed warm throughout.

04 Will I need to upgrade my radiators?

Sometimes, but less often than people think. Heat pumps work best at lower flow temperatures (35-50°C) than gas boilers (60-70°C), so some radiators may need to be larger to deliver the same heat into the room at the lower flow. We assess this during the survey and quote any required upgrades at £250 per radiator. Most of our installs require 2 to 4 radiator upgrades, often just bedrooms or smaller spaces.

05 Are heat pumps noisy?

Modern inverter-compressor heat pumps (Clivet, Vaillant, Stiebel Eltron) run at 40-45 dB at one metre, roughly the noise level of a domestic fridge. Outdoor unit position is determined during the survey to minimise impact on bedrooms and outdoor living areas. Cheap scroll-compressor budget heat pumps are significantly louder; this is one of the reasons we don’t install them.

06 How long does an air source heat pump last?

Up to 20 years operational life, roughly twice the life of a typical gas boiler. Compressors are rated for 20+ years with proper installation and annual servicing. Manufacturer warranties run 7 to 10 years standard.

07 What about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

£7,500 grant for replacing a mains gas or direct electric heating system. £7,500 grant for replacing an oil or LPG system (the BUS grant is the same regardless of fuel). The grant is paid directly to the installer (us) which reduces the headline price on your proposal. We handle the entire BUS application paperwork on your behalf, typical approval window 4 to 6 weeks.

08 Is there VAT to add?

No. UK residential heat pump installs are zero-rated for VAT until at least 2027 under HMRC rules covering domestic renewable energy. The prices above are what you pay.
