Why solar makes more sense in 2026 than ever

Three things have changed in the last two years that make solar the strongest residential energy investment available right now.

Energy prices stay elevated.

The current Ofgem price cap sits at roughly twice the pre-2022 level, with autumn revisions expected to push it higher again. Every kWh you generate yourself is a kWh you don’t pay 27p+ for from the grid.

Battery economics flipped.

Battery storage prices have fallen roughly 30% since 2022, while electricity prices climbed. The result: pairing solar with a battery now pays back in 5 to 7 years rather than the 10 to 12 it used to take. Self-consumption rates jump from around 30% to 40% (solar alone) to 70% to 80% with a battery, doubling the value of every kWh your panels produce.

Smart tariffs reward solar households.

Octopus Go, Octopus Intelligent, and similar off-peak tariffs let battery-equipped solar customers shift cheap night-time grid electricity into daytime use, on top of the free solar they’re already generating. The result is the lowest household electricity cost achievable in the UK today.

The panels we install

We have settled on three panel brands that cover the range of what customers want.

SunPower panels installed across a domestic roof

Sunpower

East Anglia’s top installer

Sunpower is the premium tier. It is the only domestic solar panel on the UK market that comes with a 30-year service warranty, 30-year production guarantee, and 30-year product warranty as a combined package. For customers who want their panels to outlast multiple ownership cycles, SunPower is the answer. We are East Anglia's top SunPower installer by volume, with deep experience across the full residential range.

AIKO solar panels on a residential roof

AIKO

Premium efficiency, premium positioning

AIKO is our mid-tier recommendation. Latest-generation n-type TOPCon technology, 25-year warranty, industry-leading shade tolerance. For most family homes AIKO is the sensible choice: high-end performance without the SunPower price point.

Eurener solar panels on a tiled roof

Eurener

European-made provenance

Eurener is our European-manufactured option. Spanish-made, 25-year warranty, strong build quality. We install Eurener when customers specifically want EU provenance, or when site constraints make a slightly different panel format the better fit.

How solar and battery storage work together

If you’re considering solar in 2026, the question isn’t really whether to add a battery. It’s whether to add the battery on day one or retrofit later. Here’s why:

A solar array without a battery typically self-consumes about 30% to 40% of what it generates. The rest exports to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee at roughly 5p to 12p per kWh. That’s not nothing, but it’s significantly less than the 27p+ per kWh you pay to import grid electricity.

A solar array with a battery self-consumes about 70% to 80% of what it generates. Daytime solar that you can’t use immediately charges the battery instead of exporting; that stored electricity then powers your evening loads (cooking, washing machine, lights, TV). You buy far less grid electricity, and some high-export households see their annual electricity bills come out positive (being paid more in exported electricity than the cost of electricity they consume).

We’re the UK’s largest domestic Solis installer, which means we install the Solis hybrid inverter ecosystem end-to-end: panel-to-battery, battery-to-grid, battery-to-app. Solis hybrids are the workhorse of UK residential solar, with proven reliability, full smart-tariff compatibility, and remote monitoring built in.

For customers who want the premium battery experience, we’re a Tesla Powerwall Premium Certified Installer. For the new generation of all-in-one home energy systems, we’re a Sigenergy Gold Installer. You pick the system that fits your home; we don’t recommend the system we have the deal on.

Work through the full battery economics
Rated five out of five stars
“The installation day went well. The team was pleasant and left the home clean and tidy. Over the past year my home consumed 6,251 kWh and generated 5,765 kWh. My Octopus direct debit is now just £1. With full ROI expected within 5 to 6 years, I view the system as prepaying my energy in exchange for long-term returns.”
Ian Baker, Greenscape customer in IP7

What you’ll save

Customer savings vary based on system size, whether you have a battery, your tariff, and your daytime usage pattern. Two realistic tiers, drawn from our install database:

Typical solar savings by setup
Setup Typical annual saving Over 25 years
Solar only£750 to £1,500£25,000 to £60,000+
Solar + battery storage£1,500 to £3,500£35,000 to £80,000+

On top of the running-cost savings, solar adds resale value: homes with solar panels sell for up to £2,800 more in competitive UK markets, according to Solar Energy UK research.

For Smart Export Guarantee customers, every kWh you export earns roughly 5p to 15p per kWh, typically paid monthly.

How big a system do I need?

A rough sizing guide based on a typical UK household with average usage:

System sizing by property type
Property Typical system Number of panels Indoor floor area guide
1-bed flat or small bungalow2.76 kWp6 panels (460W each)up to 60 m²
2-3 bed house4.6 kWp10 panels (460W each)60 to 100 m²
4-5 bed house6.44 kWp14 panels (460W each)100 to 160 m²
Larger property or high usage8.28 kWp+18+ panels (460W each)160 m²+

How much electricity does a 10-panel (4.6 kWp) array actually generate?

A typical 10-panel (4.6 kWp) array on a sunny day generates around 23 kWh, and on a cloudy day around 5 kWh. Over the full year, expect 4,000 to 4,500 kWh of generation in East Anglia, which is one of the sunnier regions of the UK.

These are starting points. The actual sizing comes from your free survey, which factors in roof orientation, shading, your annual usage, and whether you’re planning to add an EV or heat pump in the future.

How do solar panels actually work?

Solar PV panels convert sunlight directly into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. Sunlight hits the silicon cells, dislodges electrons, and creates a direct current (DC). An inverter on the wall converts that DC to alternating current (AC) at 230V, which is what your home runs on.

Modern panels generate electricity whenever there’s daylight, including overcast days (at roughly 30% of peak output) and even in light rain. A typical system runs from about 7am to 7pm in summer and 8am to 4pm in winter.

Anything you don’t use in real time either charges your battery (if you have one) or exports to the grid for the Smart Export Guarantee payment.

Why Greenscape?

We’re a specialist renewable energy installer, not a generalist trades business that added solar to the menu. Solar is what we do.

Rated five out of five stars
“Really professional, it was great. Greenscape just get on with it and do things right. My energy bills now average just £120 per month across the year, and I earn £180 annually in export payments. ROI in 6 to 7 years. The installation has already had a ripple effect, with several neighbours inspired by their setup and choosing to go solar too.”
Chris Warner, Greenscape customer in CM17

What we don’t do

Worth being explicit about, because plenty of installers do these things and customers should know the difference:

We’re in-house first.

Our own employed engineers run most installs. On peak-volume weeks we work with a small vetted subcontractor pool we’ve used for years, never random pickups, and Greenscape stays fully responsible for the work and the 10-year guarantee.

We don’t add hidden extras after the survey.

The quote you sign is the price you pay.

We don’t use pressure-sales tactics or “sign today” deals.

Take your time. Get other quotes. Come back if we’re the right fit.

We don’t charge for the survey if your home isn’t suitable.

Why would we? The survey tells you whether solar makes sense for your property. If it doesn’t, you walk away owing nothing.

We don’t use polycrystalline panels or rebadged clearance stock.

SunPower, AIKO, or Eurener only. Premium tier across the board.

We don’t recommend systems that don’t fit your home.

A 20-panel system on a roof that only suits 12 makes us money and costs you efficiency. We won’t do it.

Pricing

Solar pricing varies with system size, panel choice, inverter, and whether you’re adding a battery. We’re a premium installer, not a budget one, but our prices remain transparent.

Had my Air Con installed today.. Could not fault the two installers who attended. . Arrived nice and early, took a look around outside and indoors no hesitation in starting work and confirming where I wanted the appliance. Shoes off each time they entered house and completed the tidy up after themselves. Remote and operation of A/C explained to me.. Good work, keep it up.

I've just had solar panels, battery and EV charger installed by Mark and Luke. They arrived a little early, did the job as quietly as possible with no fuss, and have finished much earlier than I'd expected. Mark then explained what's what, which I think I'll remember. Couldn't expect more. Scaffolding subcontractor was similarly efficient putting the scaffolding up. The back office and survey staff have been friendly and efficient too. It has been good to be able to visit the showroom office in Ipswich.

I have been very impressed with the service I received from Greenscape. The initial survey was very professionally done by Andrew and I was pleased that he convinced me not to have more panels than necessary. The team that installed the battery and inverter were excellent and very pleasant to deal with. The system is up and running and there have been no complications. I thoroughly recommend Greenscape.

I arranged to have solar panels and a battery installed by Greenscape via OVO Energy. From start to finish, the service has been excellent. From the survey, to the panel installation and battery installation, every team member has been professional and very friendly. The after sales have kept in contact to make sure everything has gone smoothly. Couldn't fault Greenscape.

Common questions

01 How much do solar panels cost in the UK?

A typical Greenscape solar installation starts from £6,500 for solar only. Solar with 10 kWh battery storage starts from £8,500, 16 kWh from £9,500, and 32 kWh from £11,500. Every solar and battery system we install is tailored to the individual property, household energy usage, and future requirements of the homeowner. Following your free property survey, we design a bespoke system, alongside the homeowner and provide a personalised quotation on the same day. Finance options are available on all installations.

02 How much can I save with solar panels?

Greenscape customers typically save £750 to £1,500 a year with solar alone, and £1,500 to £3,500 a year with solar plus battery storage. Actual savings depend on system size, roof orientation, your tariff, and your usage pattern. Over the 25-year lifespan of your panels, that’s £25,000 to £60,000+ for solar alone and £35,000 to £80,000+ with a battery.

03 Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes. Solar panels generate electricity whenever there’s daylight. On a cloudy day a 10-panel (4.6 kWp) array produces around 5 to 6 kWh (versus around 23 kWh on a sunny day). Over a full UK year, expect 4,000 to 4,500 kWh of total generation from a typical 10-panel (4.6 kWp) array in East Anglia.

04 Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

For most homes in the UK, no. Solar panel installations fall under permitted development rights. Exceptions apply for listed buildings (which need full planning permission) and conservation areas (where panels must not be visible from the main road). We check during your free survey.

05 How long do solar panels last?

Standard panels are warranted for 25 years and typically continue producing well beyond that. SunPower panels carry a 30-year product, performance, and service warranty trinity, with an expected operational lifespan of 40 to 50 years. Inverters typically need replacement after 12 to 15 years.

06 What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee is a UK government scheme that pays you for surplus electricity your solar system exports to the grid. Most tariffs pay around 5p to 15p per kWh. To qualify, your system must be MCS-certified (all our installs are) and you need a smart meter.

07 Do I need a battery with my solar panels?

No, but the economics strongly favour adding one. Solar alone self-consumes about 40% of what it generates and exports the rest. Solar with battery storage self-consumes about 80%, which roughly doubles the running-cost savings. Some high-export households see their annual electricity bills come out positive (being paid more in exported electricity than the cost of electricity they consume). Installing a battery system at the same time as solar usually makes the most sense, however, if solar is the only investment you can make now, a battery can be retrofitted later.

08 Is solar still worth it in 2026?

Yes, more so than at any previous point. Three factors stack: the Ofgem price cap remains roughly double the pre-2022 level, battery storage prices have fallen ~30% since 2022, and Smart Export Guarantee rates plus off-peak smart tariffs reward households who self-consume and load-shift. The payback on a typical solar + battery install in 2026 is 5 to 7 years, down from 10 to 12 years a few years ago.
