Power Your Home with Cleaner, Cheaper Energy

Energy bills are one of the biggest and most unpredictable household costs. With prices continuing to rise, many homeowners are looking for long-term solutions that make their homes more self-sufficient. At the same time, more families are paying attention to their carbon footprint and want to play their part in creating a greener future.

With over 13 years of experience and more than 16,000 installations completed, Greenscape Energy are trusted specialists in domestic solar panels. Based in Suffolk, we proudly install residential solar PV systems across East Anglia and the surrounding areas, helping homeowners save money, generate their own power, and gain peace of mind.

The financial case is overwhelming

A typical UK home spends ÂŁ1,800 to ÂŁ2,500 a year on electricity at current Ofgem capped rates. A properly sized solar + battery system covers a large chunk of that, year after year.

Typical savings by system size
Setup Typical annual saving Over 25 years
Solar onlyÂŁ750 to ÂŁ1,500ÂŁ25,000 to ÂŁ60,000+
Solar + battery storageÂŁ1,500 to ÂŁ3,500ÂŁ35,000 to ÂŁ80,000+

The headline number people quote is “payback period”. Here is the honest 2026 reality: solar only: 7 to 10 years, solar + battery: 5 to 7 years, solar + battery + smart tariff: 4 to 6 years. After payback, every unit of electricity you generate is pure saving for the remaining 18 to 25 years of system life.

A ÂŁ10,000 cash ISA at 4% interest gives you roughly ÂŁ400 a year. The same ÂŁ10,000 invested in solar + battery gives you ÂŁ1,500 to ÂŁ3,500 a year in saved energy costs, plus ÂŁ2,800+ added home value, plus carbon impact. The financial maths is simply better.

How Do Home Solar Panels Work?

Domestic solar panels, often referred to as residential solar PV systems — capture natural daylight and convert it into clean, usable electricity. This electricity can power your home appliances, lighting, and even heating systems, reducing the amount of energy you need to buy from the grid. The process is simple, seamless, and fully automatic:

  • Solar panels on a red-tiled roof under a blue sky

    Daytime Power Generation

When sunlight hits the photovoltaic (PV) cells, they generate direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then converts this into alternating current (AC), the type of electricity your home runs on. This powers your appliances in real time, from fridges and TVs to washing machines and laptops.

  • A close-up run of solar panels across a roof

    Export Excess to the Grid

If your system produces more electricity than you use, the surplus doesn’t go to waste. It is automatically exported back to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which pays you for every unit exported. This turns your roof into a mini power station that not only saves you money but can also generate extra income.

  • A home battery unit mounted on an exterior brick wall

    Optional Solar Battery Storage

Without a battery, any excess power goes straight to the grid. But with a solar battery, you can store unused energy during the day and use it in the evening when your household consumption is highest. This increases your self-sufficiency and means you’re buying far less power from your supplier at peak prices.

  • A brick house with a full roof of solar panels, seen from the garden

    Seamless Energy Use

The entire process is automatic. You don’t need to switch anything on or off, your solar system intelligently manages the flow of electricity to ensure your home always has the cheapest, cleanest power available.

Benefits of Installing Solar Panels at Your Home

Lower Energy Bills

Installing domestic solar panels allows you to generate your own free electricity, instantly reducing the amount you buy from the grid. For the average UK home, solar alone typically saves ÂŁ750 to ÂŁ1,500 a year, and solar with a battery ÂŁ1,500 to ÂŁ3,500 a year. With electricity prices continuing to rise, solar helps protect your household from unpredictable energy markets.

Export & Earn with the SEG

If your system generates more electricity than you use, the surplus is automatically exported back to the grid. Under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), you are paid for every unit of power exported, creating a new income stream that further improves your return on investment.

Energy Independence & Security

Domestic solar PV gives you greater control over your household energy supply. By generating your own renewable electricity, you’re less exposed to sudden bill shocks and supply issues. With optional solar battery storage, you can store surplus daytime energy to use at night or during peak periods, maximising self-consumption.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Solar power is 100% renewable and emission-free. By switching your home to residential solar panels, you can reduce your household CO₂ emissions by around 1 tonne per year (based on a 4kW system). It’s a practical step towards sustainability and helps the UK achieve its Net Zero targets. A typical UK home running on grid electricity is responsible for roughly 3 to 4 tonnes of CO₂ per year from electricity alone (more if you use gas heating). Adding solar with a battery typically displaces 1.5 to 3 tonnes of those emissions per year. Over the 25 to 30 year lifespan of your system, that is 40 to 75 tonnes of CO₂ avoided. For context, that is equivalent to roughly 80,000 to 150,000 miles of driving a typical petrol car.

Increase Property Value

Homes with solar panels are more attractive to modern buyers. With lower running costs, improved Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings, and a strong sustainability profile, residential solar PV can make your property sell faster and at a higher value. The most-cited figure is from Solar Energy UK 2023 research which found solar-equipped homes commanded an average premium of ÂŁ2,800 in competitive markets, with newer high-spec systems achieving more. All Greenscape installs are MCS-certified, and we structure warranties to transfer cleanly to new owners.

Durable, Long-Term Investment

Solar panels typically last 25–30 years and come with robust performance warranties. Most homeowners achieve payback within 5–8 years, leaving decades of free electricity and SEG income afterwards. It’s a safe, long-term investment that grows in value as energy prices rise.

Silent & Low Maintenance

With no moving parts, solar panels are quiet and unobtrusive. They require very little upkeep, usually just occasional cleaning and basic checks. Inverters may need replacement once during the system’s lifetime, but overall, maintenance is minimal compared to other home energy technologies.

Protection Against Rising Prices

Grid electricity prices have been volatile in recent years. Solar panels act as a natural hedge against these fluctuations by locking in a reliable source of low-cost power for decades. The best feature solar gives you is predictability. Instead of opening monthly energy bills with anxiety, you know what your home costs to run.

Compatible with EV Charging

If you own or plan to buy an electric vehicle, solar panels can supply clean energy directly for charging. Coupled with a home battery, this means you can drive on 100% renewable power generated from your own roof. Across 12,000 miles a year, the saving versus public charging is ÂŁ1,200 to ÂŁ2,800 annually. That is enough to comfortably finance the solar install through the saving alone.

Government Incentives & Finance Options

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) ensures you’re rewarded for every kWh exported. In addition, Greenscape Energy offers flexible finance plans, so you can spread the cost of your solar investment with low monthly payments.

Trusted Technology

Solar PV is one of the most proven renewable technologies worldwide, with millions of homes already benefiting. By choosing a professional local installer, you gain peace of mind from both local expertise and national support.

Power cut protection (with backup)

UK grid outages are rare but not non-existent. In 2026 rural East Anglian customers see 1 to 3 outages a year averaging 2 to 6 hours each. Storm-related outages can stretch to 12+ hours. With whole-home backup configured (an optional add-on with Tesla Powerwall 3, Sigenergy Backup Box, or Fox EVO EPS), your home continues running during a grid outage.

Long warranties, real reassurance

Solar panels carry the longest warranties of any major home system:

  • SunPower (East Anglia only Premier installer): 30-year combined product, performance, and service warranty
  • AIKO: 25-year product warranty as standard
  • Eurener: 25-year product warranty as standard
  • Inverters: typically 10-12 years standard, often extendable
  • Batteries: 10 years standard from all major brands
  • Greenscape workmanship guarantee: 10-year insurance-backed

Domestic solar panels are one of the most effective ways to reduce energy bills, secure your home against rising prices, improve your property, and support a greener future.

How Much Do Domestic Solar Panels Cost?

The cost of installing domestic solar panels depends on several factors, including your roof size, location, shading, and how much electricity your household uses. No two homes are exactly the same, which is why we always carry out a detailed in-home survey before confirming a price. As a general guide for UK homeowners:

Investing in a residential solar PV system is not just about the installation cost — it’s about long-term savings, protection from rising energy prices, and a cleaner, more sustainable home. With energy prices continuing to climb, many families are finding solar panels pay for themselves faster than ever before.

Finance Options Available

We understand that cost is often the biggest barrier for homeowners. That’s why Greenscape Energy offers a range of finance options to make solar affordable for everyone. The objections we hear, and the honest answers

We have installed 16,879+ systems. Here are the eleven hesitations we hear most often and the truthful response to each.

01 “It is too expensive upfront”

The honest answer: It is not, when you compare it to the alternatives.

A typical solar + 10 kWh battery install costs around ÂŁ8,500. That delivers ÂŁ1,500 to ÂŁ3,500 in annual savings, plus ÂŁ2,800+ in home value. That is an 18% to 41% annual return on the capital, plus an immediate equity boost. Cash in an ISA at 4% returns ÂŁ340 per ÂŁ8,500 invested. Solar returns roughly 4 to 10 times that.

If the upfront cost is what is stopping you, finance is available on all installations through Greenscape Energy with variable terms. Many customers monthly finance payment is less than the monthly saving the system delivers, so the system pays for itself from month one.

02 “I might move in a few years”

The honest answer: Solar typically returns within the time you live in the home, AND adds resale value.

For typical UK home tenure (10-12 years), solar pays back in 5-7 years and adds ÂŁ2,800+ to resale. Even at 5-year tenure, the combination of running-cost savings during ownership PLUS resale uplift typically nets out positive. Estate agents in our region routinely flag solar as a positive at viewing.

The exception: if you are moving in under 2 years, solar might not fully pay back before you go. We will be honest with you during the survey, we have turned down customers in this situation rather than sell them something that will not deliver.

03 “My roof is not right for solar”

The honest answer: Most roofs work fine. The exceptions are obvious.

Modern panels work on:

  • South, east, AND west-facing roofs (south generates ~15% more than east/west)
  • Pitches between 10 and 60 degrees (30-40 degrees is optimal but anything in this range works well)
  • Partially shaded roofs with panel optimisers or microinverters
  • Tile, slate, concrete, and metal roofs
  • Even ground-mounted systems if no suitable roof is available

What does not work: north-facing only (50% less output), heavy permanent shade from a neighbouring building, structurally compromised roofs.

The free survey tells you definitively. If your roof is not suitable, you walk away owing nothing.

04 “The UK is too cloudy for solar”

The honest answer: This is the most common myth, and it is wrong.

UK solar systems generate 80-85% as much as the same system in southern Spain. Modern panels respond to daylight, not direct sunlight, and even on overcast days you get 20-30% of peak generation. East Anglia is one of the sunniest regions in the UK with annual generation of around 4,000-4,500 kWh from a typical 10-panel (4.6 kWp) array.

Solar works in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands at scale. The UK has more solar potential than all three.

05 “Technology will improve, I should wait”

The honest answer: Yes it will. But waiting costs you more than you will gain.

Solar tech improves by roughly 2-3% per year in efficiency and 5-10% per year in cost reduction. Meanwhile, each year you wait you forgo ÂŁ750 to ÂŁ3,500 in savings, plus pay full grid prices.

A customer who waits 5 years to “see what improves” loses £7,500-£17,500 in savings during those 5 years. The hypothetical 10-15% efficiency improvement they are waiting for does not get back that lost money.

The best time to install solar was in 2018 when feed-in tariffs paid 30p+/kWh. The second-best time is now. The technology is genuinely mature in 2026.

06 “Maintenance and hassle”

The honest answer: It is astonishingly low-touch.

Solar panels have no moving parts. They sit on your roof. Annual maintenance is essentially a software check via the app (15 minutes of your time). Rain handles most cleaning. Inverters need replacement every 12-15 years (ÂŁ1,200-ÂŁ2,000). Batteries similarly every 12-15 years.

Compared to a car (service every year, expensive failures), a boiler (annual service, replace every 12-18 years), or even a fridge (occasional failures requiring replacement), solar is genuinely lower-maintenance than nearly every major home system.

07 “Panels are ugly”

The honest answer: This was true in 2010. Modern panels look excellent.

  • All-black panels (AIKO, Eurener, SunPower) are now standard
  • In-roof mounting integrates panels into the roof line rather than on top
  • SolarSkirt edging closes the gap between the panel and roof for a finished look
  • Frameless and bifacial options for ultra-clean aesthetics

We can show you photos of similar properties to yours during the survey. Aesthetic preference is genuinely subjective, but the “ugly” stereotype is from a generation of installs that ended in 2015.

08 “Energy prices might drop”

The honest answer: They will not. Or if they do, the floor is still well above pre-2021 levels.

Three structural reasons:

Forecasts from Cornwall Insight (the energy analysts most quoted by Ofgem) show prices remaining within 10-20% of the current cap for the next 5 years.

09 “What about the cowboys in the industry?”

The honest answer: They exist, and we are here partly to differentiate.

Greenscape Energy holds:

  • MCS certification (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) on every install
  • NAPIT, TrustMark, RECC, HIES accreditation
  • Tesla Powerwall Premium Certified Installer status
  • Sigenergy Gold Installer status
  • SunPower Premier Installer status (East Anglia top)
  • UK largest domestic Solis installer
  • Octopus Trusted Partner
  • Suffolk Carbon Charter Gold Member
  • 600+ five-star reviews across Google and Trustpilot
  • 14 years trading (since 2012)
  • 10-year insurance-backed workmanship guarantee on every install

If you are worried about installer quality, ask any quote-giving installer to provide evidence of these credentials. The difference is obvious immediately.

10 “I am too old / it will not pay back in time”

The honest answer: Two things to consider.

First, payback is shorter than people assume: 5-7 years for a typical solar + battery install. If you are 60, you will be 65-67 when payback completes, well within typical UK life expectancy.

Second, solar adds resale value immediately: ÂŁ2,800+ added to your home from day one. Even if you do not live to see full operational payback, the equity is captured at sale.

For customers in their 70s and 80s, the calculation shifts toward “what is the legacy value to my family”. Many of our older customers install primarily to leave their family/property in a stronger financial position, with full energy independence built in.

11 “I would rather wait for the next big thing (hydrogen, fusion, etc.)”

The honest answer: Do not.

  • Hydrogen: viable for industry but not residential heating. Hydrogen homes are roughly 25 years out at best and likely never economically viable at scale.
  • Fusion: still 30+ years from grid contribution, possibly 50+. Not a residential consideration.
  • Other speculative tech: none of it is closer to deployable scale than solar already is.

Solar in 2026 is a mature, proven, financially-superior technology. The “wait for something better” argument is the argument that never installs.

  • Two Greenscape installers working along a run of roof-mounted panels

    Pigeon Proofing · £600

Reinforced galvanised steel wire mesh fitted around the panel array to prevent pigeons nesting underneath. Birds nesting under panels cause noise, mess, and chewed cables that can lead to system failures. Retrofitting pigeon proofing later requires scaffolding back up, so doing it during the original install is significantly cheaper.

  • A ground-mounted solar array in a field

    SolarSkirt · £200 per panel

Sleek black aluminium edging that closes the gap beneath your panels for a premium, integrated look. Prevents pests and debris build-up, reduces wind uplift on the array, eliminates the need for retrofit bird proofing later. Aesthetic and protective in one.

  • Two Greenscape installers working along a run of roof-mounted panels

Advanced Safety Package (DC Containment) · £295

All external DC cable runs securely enclosed in durable conduit, protecting from weather exposure and pests. Prevents the kind of arc faults that occur at unprotected DC connection points. Future-proofs the install for tightening insurance and safety regulations.

  • A ground-mounted solar array in a field

    Performance Assurance Guarantee · £387

10-year guarantee that your system generates at least the production we predicted. Annual remote monitoring and reporting included. If the system underperforms, we take all necessary remedial action (annual servicing, component replacement, optimisation) at no extra cost.

  • Two Greenscape installers working along a run of roof-mounted panels

Tigo Optimisers · £75 per panel

Panel-level optimisation. Each panel operates independently at its peak output rather than being limited to the lowest-performing panel in the string. Particularly valuable for partially shaded roofs or arrays with mixed orientation. Includes Tigo monitoring and rapid-shutdown safety feature.

  • A ground-mounted solar array in a field

18th Edition Consumer Unit with Surge Protection · £480

Dedicated solar consumer unit meeting current 18th Edition regulations, with built-in surge protection. Shields sensitive home electronics from grid fluctuations and lightning-induced surges. Most pre-2018 home electrical boards don’t meet this standard.

  • Two Greenscape installers working along a run of roof-mounted panels

Additional String and Isolation · £175

For larger systems, splits the panel array across multiple inverter inputs (multiple Maximum Power Point Trackers). Increases total system capacity, allows partial shading to affect only one string, future-proofs against panel additions.

Frequently asked questions

Thinking about working with Greenscape Energy Ltd? Below, we’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions about our company, services, and values.

01 Do solar panels work in the UK climate?

Yes. Domestic solar panels generate electricity all year round in the UK. While they perform best in summer, even cloudy days provide useful power. On average, a 4kW system in East Anglia can generate between 3,400–4,200 kWh of electricity per year, making solar one of the most effective renewable options for UK homes.

02 How much roof space do I need?

A typical 4kW home solar system requires around 20–25 m² of roof space. Smaller homes can often install systems from 2–3 kW, while larger properties may have enough space for 6–8 kW or more.

03 Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

In most cases, no. Solar panels fall under “permitted development rights”. Exceptions may apply for listed buildings, conservation areas, or homes with flat roofs visible from the road. Your local authority can confirm if consent is required.

04 How much do domestic solar panels cost?

The cost varies depending on system size, property type, and installation complexity. As a guide, a 3–4 bedroom home can expect to pay between £5,000–£9,000 for a solar system. Payback periods are usually 6–8 years, with 20+ years of low-cost energy afterwards.

05 How long does it take to install solar panels?

Most domestic solar installations take just 1–2 days once scaffolding is in place. Larger systems or systems including battery storage may take slightly longer. Installation is carried out by MCS-accredited professionals and disruption is kept to a minimum.

06 Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunlight. Output is lower on cloudy days, but they still produce power year-round. For example, a 4kW system may generate around 20 kWh on a sunny summer day, but still produce 5–6 kWh on an overcast day.

07 What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

The Smart Export Guarantee is a government-backed scheme that pays you for exporting unused solar electricity back to the grid. Payments vary depending on your energy supplier, but many tariffs currently pay around 12–20p per kWh.

08 What are the environmental benefits of solar panels?

Solar PV reduces your home’s reliance on fossil fuels and lowers your carbon footprint. On average, a 4kW system can save around 1 tonne of CO₂ per year — equivalent to planting 50+ trees annually. Over 25 years, this adds up to 25 tonnes of CO₂ saved per household.

09 Which areas does Greenscape Energy cover?

We install solar panels across East Anglia and surrounding counties, including:

  • Norfolk: Norwich, Thetford, Dereham, King’s Lynn, Great Yarmouth, Diss, Wymondham.
  • Suffolk: Ipswich, Felixstowe, Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket, Sudbury, Lowestoft, Newmarket, Woodbridge, Haverhill.
  • Cambridgeshire: Cambridge, Ely, Huntingdon, St Ives, St Neots, March, Wisbech, Peterborough.
  • Essex: Colchester, Chelmsford, Clacton, Braintree, Witham, Maldon, Harwich.
  • Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire & beyond: Bishop’s Stortford, Hertford, Luton, Bedford, Biggleswade, St Albans, Stevenage, Watford.
  • Lincolnshire (South): Spalding, Bourne, Stamford, Market Deeping.
  • Northamptonshire: Northampton, Oundle, Rushden, Wellingborough.
10 What roof types are suitable for solar panels?

Most roof types are suitable, including tiled, slate, and flat roofs. South-facing roofs deliver the best performance, but east- and west-facing roofs can also provide strong results. Shading, orientation, and roof condition are all checked during your in-home survey to ensure your system is designed for maximum efficiency.

11 What happens if I generate more energy than I use?

Any surplus electricity is automatically exported back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). You are paid for every unit exported, which helps improve your return on investment.

12 How long do solar panels last?

Solar PV systems are designed to last 25–30 years, with performance warranties to match. Inverters may need replacing once during this time (typically after 10–15 years). Panels continue generating electricity well beyond their warranty period, though with slightly reduced efficiency.

13 How much can I save on my energy bills with solar panels?

Savings depend on your system size and household energy use. In East Anglia, where sunshine hours are above the UK average, solar alone typically saves ÂŁ750 to ÂŁ1,500 a year, and solar with a battery ÂŁ1,500 to ÂŁ3,500 a year. Over 25 years, that is ÂŁ25,000 to ÂŁ60,000+ for solar alone and ÂŁ35,000 to ÂŁ80,000+ with a battery, especially when combined with SEG export payments.

14 How many solar panels will I need?

The number of panels depends on your roof space, household usage, and energy goals. As a rough guide:

  • 1–2 bedroom home → ~6–8 panels (2–3 kWp)
  • 3–4 bedroom home → ~10–12 panels (4–5 kWp)
  • 5+ bedroom home → ~14–16 panels (6 kWp+)

An in-home survey is essential to calculate the exact number for your property.

15 Can I add solar battery storage?

Yes. Battery storage can be installed alongside a new solar PV system or retrofitted to an existing one. A solar battery lets you store excess electricity generated during the day and use it later, increasing your self-consumption and reducing grid reliance.

16 Are there government grants or incentives for solar panels?

At present, there are no direct government grants for residential solar panel installations, other than Eco4/LA Flex (Check out our Tariffs and Funding Page). However, the SEG ensures you are paid for exported electricity, and VAT on domestic solar installations is currently 0%, reducing the upfront cost.

17 Will solar panels increase the value of my home?

Yes. Studies show homes with solar panels can increase in value by several thousand pounds. Solar improves EPC ratings, lowers running costs, and makes your property more attractive to environmentally conscious buyers.

18 What warranties are available on solar panels?

Most solar panels come with 25-year performance warranties, guaranteeing a minimum output level over their lifetime. Inverters typically have warranties of 10–15 years, and workmanship is covered by a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee.

Savings estimates are based on a south-facing roof at 32 degrees pitch with no shading, East Anglia irradiation data, a tariff of GBP 0.30/kWh peak and GBP 0.085/kWh off-peak, 70% solar self-consumption, and battery load-shifting on 180 days per year. Actual savings vary with site conditions, usage patterns, system performance, and future tariff changes.
