Excellent support, very efficient and useful.
Battery Storage Funding: VAT, Smart Tariffs and Finance
Battery storage does not have a dedicated UK grant in the way heat pumps do. What it has is something arguably more valuable: 0% VAT on the install, smart tariff arbitrage that turns the battery into a money-making asset from day one, consumer finance over 60 to 120 months, plus inclusion in the Warmer Homes scheme for eligible households. This page covers the financial picture for residential battery storage in 2026.

The battery funding stack
A 10 to 16 kWh residential battery typically costs £6,800 to £8,900 supply and install. The funding stack against that cost looks like:
| Component | Approximate value |
|---|---|
| 0% VAT on energy-saving materials | 20% saving on the install (around £1,400-£1,800 on a typical battery) |
| Smart tariff arbitrage | £600-£1,200/year, before any solar contribution |
| Solar self-consumption uplift (if combined with solar) | Self-consumption rises from 25-35% to 75-85% |
| Consumer finance | Spreads the upfront cost across 5-10 years |
| Smart export earnings at peak times | £150-£350/year on Octopus Flux-style tariffs |
For a battery installed on a smart tariff, the running cost saving alone (£600-£1,200 a year) is typically larger than the monthly finance payment on a 5 to 10 year term. That means the battery is cash-flow positive from day one for most customers.
0% VAT on energy-saving materials
Domestic battery storage qualifies for 0% VAT under the UK's energy-saving materials relief, whether installed with new solar or as a retrofit to existing solar (or even on a standalone basis without solar). This represents a 20% saving compared with the standard VAT rate.
The 0% rate is in place until 31 March 2027 under current legislation. A 10 kWh Solis IntelliHome retrofit at around £6,800 today would cost approximately £8,160 if VAT reverted to 20%, so the relief is a meaningful £1,360 saving.
We register and apply 0% VAT on every battery install we deliver. The proposal figure is the figure you pay.

Smart tariff arbitrage
This is the biggest financial driver for battery storage. A battery on a standard variable tariff saves very little. A battery on a smart tariff saves £600 to £1,200 per year, before you have generated a single kWh of solar.
The mechanism is simple. The battery charges from the grid during off-peak windows (overnight on Intelligent Octopus Go at 7p/kWh, three windows per day on Cosy at 11-14p/kWh, dynamic windows on Agile). It then discharges into the house through the peak hours, when grid electricity would otherwise cost 27-30p/kWh.
The saving per cycle is the difference between the cheap window rate and the peak rate, multiplied by the battery's useable capacity. For a 10 kWh battery on Intelligent Octopus Go cycling once per day:
(0.27 - 0.07) x 10 kWh x 365 days = £730/year
For a 13 kWh battery on Octopus Flux cycling once per day with peak-time export earning 28p/kWh, OR a 13 kWh battery on a flat tariff exporting at EDF Energy’s 15p/kWh SEG rate:
Charge at 9p, discharge into house avoiding 30p, plus export of surplus solar at 28p = approximately £950-£1,100/year
These are real numbers from our 2024-2026 install base. The actual saving depends on your usage pattern, but the range holds across the customer base.

Adding a battery to existing solar
If you already have solar (whether installed by us or another company, FIT-era or post-FIT), adding a battery retrofit is one of the highest-return upgrades available.
Without a battery, around 65-75% of your solar generation exports to the grid at 5-15p per kWh, then you buy electricity back at 27-30p per kWh in the evening. You lose the difference, every day.
With a battery added, self-consumption rises from 25-35% to 75-85%. The energy you previously exported for 5-15p is now stored and used in the evening, avoiding the 27-30p import cost. Net benefit on a typical 4 kW solar + 10 kWh battery retrofit: around £500-£700 per year on top of any pre-existing solar savings.
For Feed-in Tariff customers, adding a battery does NOT affect FIT payments. The generation tariff is based on what your panels produce (unchanged by a battery), and the export tariff is "deemed" (assumed at 50%) for most FIT customers, so actual export is irrelevant to your FIT income.
Warmer Homes scheme for battery storage
The UK Government's Warmer Homes scheme (the successor to ECO4) includes battery storage as part of broader retrofit packages, particularly when bundled with solar PV and insulation. Eligibility is based on household income, EPC band and benefit status.
For eligible households, this can mean the battery storage element is part-funded or fully funded. Ask us during your survey and we will check your eligibility.
Consumer finance for batteries
For the upfront cost of a battery, finance through Greenscape Energy covers most household budgets:

| £11,800 (Sigenergy 16 kWh) | 120 months | 7.9% | £143 | £900-£1,400 |
On a 5-year finance term, the monthly payment is typically close to or below the monthly saving from smart tariff arbitrage. On a 10-year term, the payment is lower still. The battery typically pays for itself before the finance term ends.
0% APR on agreements of 1 to 2 years. Longer terms, up to 10 years, are 7.9% APR. Subject to status, credit checks apply. Greenscape Energy Limited is FCA-authorised as a credit broker (FCA registration 690130).
A worked example
A typical retrofit scenario: 4-bed Suffolk family home, existing 4 kW solar from 2018 (on FIT), adding a 10 kWh Solis IntelliHome battery on Intelligent Octopus Go.
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Battery install cost (with 0% VAT) | £6,800 |
| FIT income (unchanged) | £590/year |
| Pre-battery electricity bill | £1,400/year |
| Self-consumption rise (35% to 80% on solar) | +1,350 kWh/year |
| Smart tariff overnight charging savings | +£500/year |
| Post-battery electricity bill | ~£460/year |
| Annual saving | £940 |
| Optional 60-month finance at 7.9% APR | £138/month |
| Annual finance cost | £1,656 |
| Net cash flow during finance term | -£716/year (less than a typical household saving for holidays) |
| After finance ends (year 6 onwards) | £940/year saved indefinitely |
| 15-year cumulative net | +£5,820 in your pocket |
Customers without finance pay £6,800 upfront and see the savings roll in immediately. Payback is around 7-8 years on cash purchase.

Frequently asked questions
01 Do I need solar to install a battery?
No. Battery storage on a smart tariff pays back on grid arbitrage alone (around £600-£1,200/year on a 10-13 kWh battery). Solar makes the case stronger, but battery-only installs are valid and viable. We do these regularly.
02 Will my smart export rate fall when I add a battery?
Not the rate per kWh, but the volume of export will fall because you self-consume more. Net financial benefit of the battery is still strongly positive. We model this exactly during your survey.
03 What happens to my battery saving if smart tariffs change?
Smart tariffs do change periodically. Octopus and other suppliers iterate their tariff design every 12-24 months. The underlying economics (peak vs off-peak grid pricing) is structural and has widened over time, not narrowed. A battery installed in 2026 is well-positioned for the smart tariff landscape of 2030.
04 Can I get a battery on the Warmer Homes scheme even if I do not need solar?
Possibly, depending on eligibility and delivery route. Some scheme designs include battery storage as a stand-alone option for households on cheap-rate tariffs. Ask us and we will check your eligibility.
05 Is there a Boiler Upgrade Scheme equivalent for batteries?
Not currently. The BUS specifically funds heat pumps and biomass. Battery storage is supported through the 0% VAT relief, smart tariff arbitrage, and (for eligible households) the Warmer Homes scheme, rather than a dedicated grant. This is unlikely to change before the next UK general election but could change after.
Our reviews speak for themselves
Great technical support from a most personable Callum.
My email was answered by Chloe Hickman who made the adjustment I requested by return. Thank you Chloe, well done. Keep up the good work.
Had my Air Con installed today.. Could not fault the two installers who attended. . Arrived nice and early, took a look around outside and indoors no hesitation in starting work and confirming where I wanted the appliance. Shoes off each time they entered house and completed the tidy up after themselves. Remote and operation of A/C explained to me.. Good work, keep it up.
I had a conversation with Callum Wrigley yesterday and he was very polite, efficient and completed my requirements very quickly, I would not hesitate to recommend him and Greenscape energy
Easy payment by credit card
I've just had solar panels, battery and EV charger installed by Mark and Luke. They arrived a little early, did the job as quietly as possible with no fuss, and have finished much earlier than I'd expected. Mark then explained what's what, which I think I'll remember. Couldn't expect more. Scaffolding subcontractor was similarly efficient putting the scaffolding up. The back office and survey staff have been friendly and efficient too. It has been good to be able to visit the showroom office in Ipswich.
Good communication. Did what was required promptly Thank you Callum
After leaving a message and emailing w/b 5 Oct 26, I telephoned again at the end of that week and spoke with Callum Wrigley in the tech dept. He listened to my concern, was very understanding and dealt with the problem I had efficiently and to my satisfaction. Thank you Callum
Good Service
Michaela, dealt with my finance query in a professional, efficient manner, and placated my fears that the progress on my solar system would be paused until the return of the surveyor from holiday. Good customer care. Thank you
Very professional and efficient from the sales engagement through to commissioning. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them.
I have been very impressed with the service I received from Greenscape. The initial survey was very professionally done by Andrew and I was pleased that he convinced me not to have more panels than necessary. The team that installed the battery and inverter were excellent and very pleasant to deal with. The system is up and running and there have been no complications. I thoroughly recommend Greenscape.
I arranged to have solar panels and a battery installed by Greenscape via OVO Energy. From start to finish, the service has been excellent. From the survey, to the panel installation and battery installation, every team member has been professional and very friendly. The after sales have kept in contact to make sure everything has gone smoothly. Couldn't fault Greenscape.
